At work on Wednesday, Janine’s phone beeped with the arrival of a text. When she saw the unknown number, her stomach tightened; she had a good idea who it was from.

She quickly finished washing her client’s hair and passed the lady a towel. “Wrap this round your head and go and sit there.” She pointed to the styling chair facing the mirrored wall. “I’ll be back in a sec.” Janine took her phone to the small room in the back and opened the text.

‘Fancy a night out at the casino one evening this weekend? Let me know if you can make Friday or Saturday. SB’

It took her a while to remember Bromley’s first name was Stephen. She wondered if his friends called him Stephen or Steve. Stevie, maybe…? No, none of those seemed to fit—she’d always think of him as Bromley.

She took a moment to remember which night Adam was due to work the late shift, then replied, ‘How about Friday?’

His reply was immediate: ‘Great. A car will pick you up at 9’

She read his text and squeezed her thighs together. As Janine went back through to the salon, her mind ran through the options of what to wear for her night out.
